The sax in this song is an unrehearsed one off, straight through, no cuts or edits masterpiece.
The Sax player Andrew Griffiths played it while listening to the accompanying piano arrangement and reading off from the lyric sheet.
It was recorded just in case we were able to reuse any parts of his first practice.
As soon as Andrew blew out the first note it was right. Tracy whispered to me "I'm getting shivers"
By the time Andrew fought and weaved his way through the expertly played piano notes and the incredibly strong lyrics of the first verse the whole studio was on stop.
The drummer Ryan just sat there and watched with eyes glazed as he and the whole studio mentally urged him on into the second verse.
The second verse finished with perfection as did the third and final then everyone waited in anticipation as the last note fell from Andrews lips and pushed its way through the ancient but expertly crafted instrument and out into the open to meet the ears of some of the most expertly tuned ears in the land of song .
As a result of Andrews performance the studio musicians refused to play over Andrews piece and thus the song "If You Have To Leave Me" is as it is.
